At least 70 killed in gold mine collapse in Mali

More than 70 people died in a gold mine collapse in Mali, West Africa. The accident occured late last week but the accident and the death toll were officially confirmed by the government on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Friday in Kangaba district of the south-western Koulikoro region, according to Karim Barthe, a senior official at the government's National Geology and Mining Directorate.

In a statement issued by the Mines Ministry on Tuesday, it was feared that many people would die in the accident. It was made clear on Wednesday that more than 70 people had died in the accident. The death toll is expected to increase as the search operation continues at the scene.

Expressing deep sorrow over the accident, the Mines Ministry has appealed to the communities living near mining sites to follow safety guidelines.
