Dharmendra Pradhan’s 'Uncivilised' Remarks Draws Fire,Congress Demands Minister’s Resignation

NEW DELHI: In protest against Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan calling Tamil Nadu MPs "uncivilized" during a parliamentary discussion, Tamil Nadu MPs staged a demonstration outside Parliament House on Tuesday.

MDMK MP Durai Vaiko and DMK MP Kanimozhi demanded an apology from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded for the minister’s resignation. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee also extended support to the Tamil MPs.

Congress President Kharge stated that such remarks were aimed at dividing the country and insulted a section of its people. He said, "If you hurt the self-respect of a part of this country, of its people, and call them uncivilized, then you should demand the minister’s resignation! The Modi government is breaking the nation."

MDMK MP Durai Vaiko remarked, "In 1965, thousands of students were shot during protests. Our Chief Minister had passed a resolution that Tamil Nadu would only implement two languages. We don’t want Hindi. We will never accept Hindi. This is the background. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, with great arrogance, called Tamil MPs uncivilized. How dare he says this about the people of Tamil Nadu? He must apologize. We won’t let anything happen in the House. We demand his apology."

DMK MP Kanimozhi said, "Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has hurt the sentiments of Tamils. He has also insulted the elected representatives of Tamil Nadu. Without escalating what he said, we expect an apology from him. We have filed a privilege motion against him. We appeal to the Speaker to accept it and take action."

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee added, "Trinamool Congress supports DMK’s stand. I was present in the House today. The language used by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was not befitting parliamentary decorum. For a Union Minister to use such language was absolutely shocking. It was done to demean the people of Tamil Nadu. He should either apologize on his own, or he should be removed from the Cabinet Minister post. The Prime Minister should listen to what his ministers are saying."
