Left Alliance Triumphs in JNUSU Elections, ABVP Secures One Post

In the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, the Left AllianceUnity panel clinched three key posts, including the presidency, while the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) marked its return to the JNU student union after a decade by winning one seat. Celebrations continued late into the night on the JNU campus, with both sides waving red and saffron flags.

Nitish Kumar from the All India Students’ Association (AISA) won the presidency, Manisha from the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) secured the vice-presidency, and Munteha, also from DSF, was elected general secretary. This year, after parting ways with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), AISA formed an alliance with DSF.

ABVP’s Vaibhav Meena won the joint secretary post, becoming the first from the organization to secure a central panel position in recent history. ABVP also claimed to have won 24 out of 42 counselor seats.

Speaking after his victory, AISA’s Nitish Kumar said, “Funding for this campus has been consistently slashed. We will fight to bring back funds from the government’s coffers. The campus infrastructure, which has been ruined, will be restored. The JNU entrance exam model will be reinstated… The Left movement on this campus stands strong. If ABVP’s joint secretary (Vaibhav Meena) dares to deviate even a step from the mandate given by this campus or speaks a single word against JNU, the entire panel will stand against him.”

This year, the United Left split into two blocs. SFI formed a Left-Ambedkarite panel with the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), and Progressive Students’ Association (PSA), while AISA allied with DSF.

JNU has long been a Left stronghold, with AISA and SFI securing the presidency multiple times. Since 2016, AISA and SFI have contested under the Left Unity alliance to collectively counter the RSS-affiliated ABVP.
