Modi Ji has suffered political and moral defeat : Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI: After being re-elected as the head of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that Modi suffered a political and moral defeat in this Lok Sabha election and he has now lost the right to lead.

Addressing the newly elected MPs in the central hall of the 'Samvidhan Sadan' (old Parliament), she also said that instead of taking responsibility for the failure, the Prime Minister intends to take oath again on Sunday.

Sonia Gandhi said, "We do not expect him to change his style of governance, nor he will take cognizance of the will of the people."

In the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, party president Mallikarjun Kharge presented a proposal to appoint Sonia Gandhi as the CPP chief, which was opposed by three MPs of the party. Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar and K. Sudhakaran approved.

Sonia Gandhi has been continuously playing the responsibility of the head of the party's parliamentary party since 1999.

Congress leaders said that in the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting held in the Central Hall of Samvidhaan Sadan (Old Parliament House), party president Mallikarjun Kharge presented a proposal to appoint Sonia Gandhi as the CPP chief, which was approved by three party MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar and K. Sudhakaran.

On being re-elected as the CPP chief, Sonia thanked the party leaders and said that Congress has shown its determination in this election.

She also claimed that Prime Minister Modi has suffered a political and moral defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and in such a situation he has lost not only the mandate but also the right to lead.

On being re-elected as the head of the parliamentary party, Sonia Gandhi said, "I am fully conscious of the huge responsibility that you all have once again placed on me... You have fought a tough election under the most challenging circumstances. You have overcome many obstacles and campaigned very effectively. Your success has given us a greater presence in the Lok Sabha and a more effective voice in its proceedings."

Referring to the results of the Lok Sabha elections, she said, "The Congress has once again demonstrated its resilience. It was against a powerful and fearsome machinery that was trying its best to destroy us. It tried to cripple us financially. It ran a campaign based on lies and defamation against us and our leaders. Many people wrote the story of our end. But under the firm leadership of Kharge ji, we stood firm. He is an inspiration to all of us."

She said that Kharge's commitment to the party organisation is truly extraordinary and everyone has to learn from his example.
