Russia Grants Formal Recognition to Taliban Government, Afghanistan Calls Decision Courageous

(Fast Mail):-- Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan, becoming the first country to grant such recognition.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it has accepted the credentials of the new ambassador sent by the Taliban. This decision is considered a significant diplomatic victory for the Taliban in gaining international legitimacy.

According to reports, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi described the move as a "courageous step" and expressed hope that other countries would follow suit.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that there are strong prospects for cooperation with Afghanistan. It emphasized continued collaboration with the Kabul government on issues such as counter-terrorism, combating drug trafficking, and security.

Additionally, Russia highlighted opportunities for trade in sectors like energy, agriculture, transportation, and infrastructure. While Russia has granted recognition to Afghanistan, no other country has formally recognized the Taliban government to date. After the U.S. withdrawal in 2021, the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan but has remained largely isolated on the international stage.

Some countries have taken steps towards engagement with Afghanistan. China, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan have appointed ambassadors to Kabul, but they have not extended formal recognition.

Russia had designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization in 2003 but lifted this ban in April 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously noted that the Taliban is now cooperating in the fight against terrorism. Since 2022, Taliban-ruled Afghanistan has been importing oil, gas, and wheat from Russia.
