Congress accuses BJP- ruled states of rising crimes against SC-STs

(Fast Mail):-- On Thursday, Rajendra Pal Gautam, the Chairman of the Congress’ Scheduled Caste Department, alleged that crimes against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) have increased in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but the governments’ approach to curbing these incidents is shameful.

Gautam also demanded that the National Scheduled Caste Commission be utilized effectively and that all state governments take cases of caste-based atrocities seriously to ensure justice for the affected.

Addressing reporters, Gautam said, “Dalits, tribals, backward classes, and minorities in the country are constantly under attack. The situation is particularly dire in BJP-ruled states, and the government’s attitude towards these incidents appears highly irresponsible.”

The Congress leader noted that the government itself has reported data on crimes against SC-ST communities in Parliament.

He stated, “In Haryana, 762 cases of atrocities were reported in 2017, which rose to 1,628 by 2021. In Madhya Pradesh, these incidents increased from 5,892 to 7,214 in a single year.” He further cited NCRB data, stating that between 2018 and 2022, atrocities against SC/ST communities surged by 35%, with 26% of these cases reported from Uttar Pradesh alone, where the BJP claims to maintain the best law and order.

Gautam highlighted that the National Scheduled Caste Commission was established to address such incidents.

He noted that out of 6,02,177 complaints received by the Commission, only 5,843 complaints from Scheduled Castes and 1,783 from Scheduled Tribes have been addressed. “If complaints are not being heard, then why was this Commission created?” he questioned. The Congress leader demanded: The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court take action against judges who deliver verdicts influenced by casteist sentiments in atrocity cases.

The National Scheduled Caste Commission, established under the Constitution, be utilized effectively.

All state governments treat cases of caste-based atrocities with utmost seriousness to ensure justice for victims.

Strict action be taken in cases of caste-based atrocities to prevent such incidents in society and instil fear in perpetrators.

Gautam further stated, “In Maharashtra, such incidents rose from 1,689 to 2,503 in a year. In Odisha, they increased from 1,669 to 2,327. In Rajasthan, cases went from 4,238 to 7,224 in a year. In Uttar Pradesh, incidents rose from 11,444 to 13,144 in a year. In Uttarakhand, the figure increased from 96 to 130 in a year.”

He emphasized that despite such incidents, the governments’ response remains shameful. He stressed, “Strict action must be taken in cases of caste-based atrocities to ensure such incidents do not occur in society and to instil fear in those who commit such crimes.”
