Pakistani Ambassador Threatens India, Says Nuclear Weapons Will Be Used if Attacked

NEW DELHI: The Pakistani Ambassador to Russia, Mohammad Khalid Jamali, has issued a stern warning to India amid escalating tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, which killed 26 people.

Speaking to Russian television channel RT, Jamali claimed that Pakistan possesses credible evidence of India’s planned military actions against certain areas of Pakistan, based on leaked documents. He suggested that an attack could be imminent.

Jamali stated that any Indian aggression, including military strikes or disruption of the Indus River’s water flow, would be considered an "act of war" by Pakistan. He emphasized that Pakistan would respond with its full military might, including both conventional and nuclear weapons.

The ambassador’s remarks come in response to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960, a move prompted by the Pahalgam attack, which India attributes to cross-border terrorism linked to Pakistan.

Highlighting the nuclear capabilities of both nations, Jamali urged de-escalation and reiterated Pakistan’s call for a neutral and credible international investigation into the Pahalgam attack, proposing the involvement of countries like China and Russia.

The IWT, a critical agreement brokered by the World Bank, governs the sharing of the Indus River system’s waters, vital for Pakistan’s agriculture and hydropower. Pakistan has warned that any attempt to stop or divert its water share would provoke a forceful response across the "complete spectrum of national power."

Tensions have surged since the attack, with India imposing diplomatic and trade restrictions, including suspending the IWT, closing borders, expelling Pakistani diplomats, and revoking visas for Pakistani nationals. Pakistan has reciprocated with similar measures, including suspending trade, closing its airspace to Indian aircraft, and threatening to suspend other bilateral agreements like the 1972 Simla Agreement. The situation remains volatile, with both nations exchanging accusations and warnings, raising fears of further escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals.
