Visakhapatnam will be new capital of Andhra Pradesh, says Chief Minister Jagan Reddy

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam will be the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Jagan Reddy announced.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy informed about this and said that the capital of the state will be shifted to Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister Reddy said that he will shift his office to Visakhapatnam. On April 23, 2015, the Andhra government declared Amravati as its capital. Then in 2020, the state planned to build three capital cities. Among them were Amravati, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool.

After this, that plan was withdrawn and Amravati remained the capital. Amravati has been at the center of an alleged land scam, for which Reddy's party YSRCP blamed former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu of the TDP. Reddy's party demanded a CBI probe, alleging that some people, who were told about the location of the new capital in advance. He had bought the land there to take unfair advantage. In a notification to the Centre, the state government said that in 2014, more than 4,000 acres of land had been purchased by such people.

But N Chandrababu Naidu rejected any such allegations and questioned why the YSRCP government is selling the land originally taken from the farmers to build the new capital. A few months ago, the Leader of the Opposition had found fault with the AP Capital Region Development Authority's decision to lease out residential towers specially built for government employees to private entities.
