"Anurag Thakur Tried To Hush The Case": Alleges Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Amid Protests
New Delhi, May 3, (Fast Mail News):-- India's top wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who is protesting at Jantar Mantar along with wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has said that it is difficult to stand against a powerful person. who is abusing his power. Wrestlers are protesting against the WFI chief over allegations of sexual harassment and demanding his arrest.
Addressing the media, Olympian Vinesh Phogat said, "It is very difficult to stand against a person who has been abusing his power and position for so long." He revealed that the wrestlers had met an official before starting their protest at Jantar Mantar for the first time, but no action was taken.
Vinesh said, "Three-four months before the sit-in at Jantar Mantar, we met an official, we told him everything about how women athletes are sexually harassed and mentally tortured, when no action was taken When she went, we sat on a dharna."
Vinesh Phogat also targeted Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for not taking any action and suppressing the matter by forming a committee. She said, "We ended our protest after talking to the Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur), and all the athletes had told him about the sexual harassment. By forming a committee, they tried to hush up the matter there, that No action was taken at the time."
Wrestler Bajrang Punia said that he is opposing the new rules introduced for selection in the Olympics. He said, "He (Brij Bhushan Singh) is saying that we have made some rules for Olympics and that's why these athletes are protesting. First of all, it is not about Olympics, it is against sexual harassment. And if I talk about the Olympic rule, then the federations will conduct trials of athletes coming from the Olympics, whoever they want."
Earlier on Saturday, the WFI chief had said that if he resigns, it would mean that he has accepted the allegations leveled by the wrestlers.
Responding to the WFI chief's comment, Vinesh Phogat said that they only want justice. The Delhi Police on Friday registered two FIRs against WFI President Singh over allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation of women wrestlers. The BJP MP said that 90 per cent players of Haryana are standing with him, while only one wrestling family is protesting at Jantar Mantar.
Earlier on April 26, wrestlers took out a candle march at Jantar Mantar and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to his 'Mann Ki Baat'. Speaking to the media, wrestler Sakshi Malik said, "We urge PM Modi to listen to our mind. Even Smriti Irani ji is not listening to us. We are trying to make him listen through this candle march."
