Mamata made mistake by not taking strict action against corruption:TMC MP Babul Supriyo

Kolkata, Jun 4 (UNI) Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Babul Supriyo has said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had made a “serious mistake” by not taking sufficiently strict action against corruption and the alleged misappropriation of public funds during the early years of her tenure.

However, he clarified that the views expressed in his social media post were entirely personal and did not reflect the official position of the party.

In a lengthy post on social media on Wednesday night, Supriyo first referred to leaders who have left their political parties after being elected on the strength of a party’s symbol, leadership and organisation.

He argued that any MP or MLA who quits the party after winning an election should also resign from the elected post.

“You can take a stand against your own party. I have done so in the past. But to honour that stand, one should also step down from the post of MP or MLA,” Supriyo wrote, recalling that he had resigned from his Lok Sabha seat after leaving the BJP.

The Trinamool MP then turned to the issue of corruption, stating that Banerjee had committed a major error by not acting firmly against those allegedly involved in corruption, embezzlement of public funds and other criminal activities from the very beginning of her government’s tenure.

“Didi (Mamata Banerjee) certainly made a serious mistake. Those who became involved in corruption, siphoning off public money and various criminal activities from day one of coming to power should have faced strict action immediately,” he wrote.

According to Supriyo, the failure to do so allowed the situation to become more complicated over time.

In another significant remark, he claimed that several controversial figures from that period are now part of a group he referred to as the “60”.

While he did not specify whom he meant by the term, the reference has triggered political speculation, particularly amid ongoing turbulence within the Trinamool Congress where 60 TMC MLAs have chosen Ritrabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition ignoring Sovondeb Chattopadhyay who was nominated as LoP by Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

Supriyo also suggested that some of those individuals have since lost elections, while others have landed in jail.

In one of the most striking portions of the post, the Rajya Sabha MP spoke of a particular individual who had left him deeply disappointed.

“I never imagined that a snake disguised as a human being was moving among us,” he wrote.

However, he did not identify the person, leading to widespread speculation in political circles about the target of the remark.

The Trinamool leader also appeared to issue a cautionary note to the BJP.

Referring to the party’s practice of inducting leaders from rival political formations in different states, he said the BJP should avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.

At the same time, Supriyo acknowledged that politics often operates under the maxim that “all is fair in love and war”.

He concluded the post by emphasising that members of political parties have limited space to express personal opinions publicly, but maintained that he had always spoken his mind and that the post should be viewed solely as his personal perspective.

Supriyo’s remarks have sparked fresh discussion in political circles, with observers noting that public criticism of Mamata Banerjee’s decisions by a sitting Trinamool MP is politically significant at a time when the ruling party is facing internal challenges and heightened scrutiny over corruption-related issues.
