BJD will no longer support BJP in Rajya Sabha: Dr. Sasmit Patra

BHUBANESWAR: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik on Monday held a meeting with nine Rajya Sabha members of his party and called upon them to play the role of a "vibrant and strong" opposition during the upcoming session of the upper house of Parliament starting June 27. In the meeting, Patnaik also asked the MPs to raise issues related to the state's interests in a proper manner.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, party leader in Rajya Sabha Dr. Sasmit Patra said, "This time BJD MPs will not limit themselves to only speaking on issues, they are determined to agitate if the BJP-led government at the Centre ignores the interests of Odisha." He said that apart from raising the demand for special status to Odisha, BJD MPs will also raise the issue of poor mobile connectivity and less number of bank branches in the state.

BJD MP Sasmit Patra said, "For the last 10 years, Odisha's demand for revision of coal royalty has been ignored by the central government,as a result, the people of the state are suffering huge losses and are deprived of their rightful share." He said that the nine MPs will act as a strong opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

When Patra was asked if the BJD would stick to its earlier stand of giving issue-based support to the BJP-led government, he said, "Now there will be no support to the BJP, only opposition. We can go to any extent to protect the interests of Odisha." Patra said, "There is no question of supporting the BJP. The BJD president told us that if the NDA government continues to ignore the genuine demands of Odisha, we should work as a strong and vibrant opposition."
