BJP govt at the centre weakening Constitution and democracy: Priyanka Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Criticising the BJP-led central government, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday alleged that for the first time in history a government is trying to weaken both the country's constitution and democracy. She said that the fight we are fighting today is not just a fight for our own politics and ideology, but a fight to save everything India has achieved.

Addressing the party's booth-level leaders in Wayanad's Eranad assembly constituency, MP Priyanka Gandhi said, "This is probably the first government in the history of our country that is trying to weaken the constitution and democracy."

She said, "You should understand that the fight we are fighting today is not just a fight for our own politics and ideology, but a fight to save everything India has achieved."

On the second day of her three-day visit to Wayanad, Priyanka spoke on the issue of human-animal conflict and said she will write to the Centre and the state government to allocate more funds as adequate funds are needed for effective safety measures. Speaking to reporters on the issue of human-animal conflict, she said she has raised the issue once before and will continue to do so.

"This is an issue we need to look into, it is a complex issue as there is no easy solution to it. Of course, I will put as much pressure as possible," she said. Priyanka said there was difficulty in getting funds from both the Centre and the state governments. "I will raise the issue and ensure that it is resolved," she said.

She said better surveillance, better safety measures, increased funds are needed to enhance the safety of forest guards, watchmen and others involved. She will later attend another meeting in Thiruvambady Assembly constituency in Kozhikode district.

On Monday, she will hold meetings with booth-level leaders in Wandoor and Nilambur assembly constituencies and also meet the families of some people killed in wild animal attacks, Congress sources said. This is her second visit to Wayanad after winning the Lok Sabha bypoll.
