Kharge claims ‘intel report’ was sent to PM Modi 3 days before Pahalgam attack

RANCHI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed on Tuesday that the government admitted to an intelligence failure regarding the Pahalgam terrorist attack and should take responsibility for the deaths of 26 people.

Addressing the Congress' 'Samvidhan Bachao  Rally,' he reiterated that the Congress would support every step taken against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and stand with the government.

Referring to the Pahalgam attack, Kharge said, "On April 22, a major terrorist attack took place in the country, in which 26 innocent people were killed. The government acknowledged it as an intelligence failure and the need to address it." He questioned, "When you were aware of this (intelligence failure), why wasn’t a proper system put in place earlier?"

Kharge further claimed, "I have received information, and it was also reported in newspapers, that three days before the attack, an intelligence report was sent to PM Modi. This is why he cancelled his Kashmir visit."

He asked why, if the intelligence agencies deemed it unsafe for the Prime Minister to visit, the same information was not shared with security agencies, police, and border security forces to ensure public safety.

He emphasized, "When you acknowledge the lapse, you should also take responsibility for the deaths of so many people." Kharge added that the Congress would fully support any steps the government takes to combat Pakistan’s terrorist activities.

PM Modi’s Jammu and Kashmir visit was scheduled for April 19 but was postponed due to adverse weather forecasts. He was to inaugurate the world’s highest Chenab Railway Bridge and flag off the Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar.

Kharge stated, "The country comes first, followed by party, religion, and caste. We have sacrificed our lives for the nation. Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi gave their lives to keep the country united. Mahatma Gandhi fought for India’s freedom but was shot by a traitor."

On April 22, terrorists killed at least 26 people, mostly tourists, in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. India has blamed Pakistan-linked terrorist groups for the horrific attack.

Kharge also noted that this was his first visit to Ranchi since the formation of the 'INDIA' alliance government in Jharkhand last year.

He thanked the people of Jharkhand for their support, stating, "With your support, we secured a majority, and today, a strong government is running in Jharkhand. Our government is fulfilling its promises to the people. Our ministers and MLAs are working well for the public, and I thank them for it."

The Jharkhand government is led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in alliance with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
