DGCA imposes Rs 30 lakh fine on Air India; suspends pilot's licence for 3 months

NEW DELHI:The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken major action in case of drunken-urination. DGCA has imposed a fine of 30 lakh rupees on Air India. Also, the license of the pilot flying the plane at the time of the incident has been suspended for 3 months. Along with this, a fine of three lakh rupees has also been imposed on the director-in-flight services of Air India for failing to discharge his duties.

Air India on Thursday imposed a four-month ban on passenger Shankar Mishra for urinating on November 26 last year. This ban was in addition to the 30-day ban imposed on him. The incident came to the notice of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on January 4 and the latest action is for violation of various norms.

The CEO of Air India apologized for this incident. The CEO said four crew members and a pilot have been suspended from duty pending an investigation and the airline is reviewing its policy on serving alcohol on board.

Even the chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, said on this matter that the incident of a drunken man urinating on a female passenger in an Air India plane is a matter of personal pain for him. Chandrasekaran said in a statement, "Air India's response should have been much faster. We failed to handle this situation the way it should have been handled."

Shankar Mishra was arrested last week after the allegations surfaced more than a month after the incident in late November. He was on the run from the police for several days. He was fired by American banking giant Wells Fargo. The accused Shankar Mishra was allegedly drunk on an Air India flight from New York to New Delhi on November 26, 2022, when he allegedly unzipped his pants and urinated on a 72-year-old woman sitting in business class.
