Before the fire tenders from the State government and nearby industries reached the spot  and the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire though it is still unknown it is believed that excessive heat conditions as the coal carrying conveyor belt remains the cause.

NTPC here at Kaniha has 3,010 MW  Coal fired power plant which supplies power  to 17 Indian states, including Odisha. It draws around 50,000 to 55,000 tonne of coal from Mahanadi Coalfields mines per day..The coal comes by railway rakes and merry-go-round system (MGR).
