Goyal's Claim on Tariffs: Will Safeguard National Interests; Congress Calls It Self-Praise

(Fast Mail):-- Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in Parliament on Thursday that the impact of import duties (tariffs) imposed by the United States on India is being assessed, and all necessary steps will be taken to protect and advance national interests.

Goyal also emphasised that the Modi government prioritises the protection and promotion of farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs, and all stakeholders in the industrial sector.

On Thursday, the Congress party accused Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal of failing to address real issues in his parliamentary statement, alleging that he ignored the concerns of Indian businesses and indulged in mere self-praise.

Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh further claimed that the much-touted personal friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump has proven to be completely hollow.

Ramesh posted on 'X': "Today, the Commerce Minister made no statement in either House of Parliament on the issue of President Trump and U.S. tariffs. He only engaged in self-praise. No discussion was held on critical issues such as the failure to secure a trade agreement with the U.S., the 25 percent import duty imposed by the U.S. on India, and additional penalties for trading with Russia and Iran. No solutions were offered for the concerns and sentiments of Indian businesses."

He added that it is abundantly clear that India is now facing new and significant challenges with the United States.

The Congress leader further stated, "The Indian economy has never recovered from the dual shocks of a bizarre demonetization and a fundamentally flawed GST. With the current levels of private corporate investment and private consumption, the growth rate of the Indian economy will not accelerate. The Modi government's own policies are responsible for this double blow."
