Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya’s Death Sentence Fully Revoked In Yemen
A statement from the office of India’s Grand Mufti Kantapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musaliyar announced that a high-level meeting held in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, decided to completely revoke Nimisha Priya’s death sentence, which had previously been temporarily suspended.
This decision is considered a result of persistent efforts by international human rights organizations, the Indian community, and religious representatives. The Grand Mufti’s office had been closely monitoring the case and intervening at various levels in Yemen.
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was convicted in March 2018 for the murder of a Yemeni citizen. In 2020, a Yemeni court sentenced her to death. Her execution was temporarily suspended earlier.
The decisive contribution of India’s Muslim religious leader, Grand Mufti Kantapuram Aboobacker Musaliyar, has been particularly noteworthy. His office stated that Yemeni authorities, during the high-level meeting in Sanaa, decided to fully revoke the death sentence.
This step is not only a positive signal for India-Yemen bilateral relations but also demonstrates that the voice of humanity and justice can prevail even in challenging circumstances.
While the death sentence has been revoked, clarity is still awaited regarding Nimisha Priya’s release and repatriation to India. Indian authorities and legal representatives will now need to carefully navigate the next steps in the process.
