In Mexico,10 migrants killed, 25 injured as truck overturns

MEXICO:At least 10 migrants have been killed and 25 others injured after a cargo truck secretly carrying migrants overturned on a highway in southern Mexico, Al Jazeera reports.

The accident occurred early Sunday morning in the Mexican state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala. CNN reported, citing a statement from Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM), that the truck was carrying 27 Cuban citizens "undocumentedly" on the Pizijyapan-Tonla highway in the southern state of Chiapas when the crash occurred.

Officials said initial reports suggested that the driver was driving at high speed and lost control of the unit and fled from the spot after the unit overturned.

According to officials, 10 of the victims were women and one was a minor. After the accident, all the injured are being treated in the hospital. "The INM will establish communications with consular authorities to begin the administrative process to repatriate the bodies to their country of origin and ascertain the health status of those seriously injured," CNN quoted the statement as saying.

Meanwhile, it was the second fatal accident involving migrants in Mexico in less than a week. Earlier on Thursday, two migrants were killed when a truck overturned in the municipality of Mezcalapa in Chiapas state, Al Jazeera reported.

In particular, migrants from Central America and the Caribbean sometimes travel through Mexico in trucks and trailers in hopes of reaching the United States. In 2021, 55 people were killed and more than 100 were injured when a truck carrying migrants overturned in Chiapas state, which borders Guatemala, CNN reported.
