Manipur: Sensing no-confidence motion, N. Biren resigned from CM post

New Delhi: After Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren resigned, the Congress party said that this resignation has come just before the time when the Congress was fully prepared for a no-confidence motion against his government in the assembly.

Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh said that the Congress was fully prepared to bring a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister N. Biren and his council of ministers in the Manipur Assembly yesterday.

“In an attempt to to quekk dissidents, the Chief Minister of Manipur has just resigned. This was a demand that the Congress was making since the beginning of May 2023, when the turmoil started in Manipur”,Ramesh said.

Jairam Ramesh said that N. Biren's resignation from the post of Chief Minister came very late. The people of Manipur are now waiting for the visit of our frequent flyer PM, who has now left for France and the US and who has neither found the time nor the desire to visit Manipur in the last 20 months.

Reacting to this latest development, senior Congress leader Udit Raj said that when the Congress party was demanding the removal of N. Biren at the right time, he was not removed. A rift has been created between the two communities (Kuki and Meitei) there forever. This government should not last for so long. He quipped, "What is the use of coming to senses after losing everything...."

Indian Youth Congress President Udaybhanu Chib said, "It is a matter of shame that the Chief Minister of Manipur and his government, who should have been dismissed many months ago to correct the situation, was allowed to run the government for so many months and resigned today. The double engine has completely destroyed Manipur."
