Nirav Modi Faces Another Setback As UK Court Rejects New Bail Plea

LONDON: Nirav Modi, the accused in India’s high-profile bank scam and an economic fugitive, has received another major blow from a UK court as the Kings Bench Division of the High Court of Justice in London has rejected his latest bail application.

Nirav Modi has been detained in London’s Wandsworth Prison for the past five years and is facing extradition proceedings to India.

Nirav Modi had requested the court to grant him bail until his extradition to India, claiming that his life would be in danger in India and, therefore, he would not attempt to flee from the UK.

However, the court dismissed this argument, stating that there remains a “substantial risk” of Nirav Modi absconding from justice, and thus, he cannot be released.

The judge remarked that for an influential and resourceful individual like Nirav Modi, escaping internationally would not be a difficult task.

The court further noted that there has been a lack of consistency in the arguments presented in his previous bail applications, and repeated claims do not inspire confidence.

Lawyers representing the Indian government clarified that adequate legal and diplomatic arrangements have been made for Nirav Modi’s extradition to India. They also assured that he would receive a fair and secure legal process in India.

Notably, Nirav Modi is the prime accused in a scam involving approximately ?14,000 crore linked to Punjab National Bank (PNB).

After the case came to light in 2018, he had been on the run and was arrested in London in March 2019.
