Russian Army Chief General Oleg Salyukov Removed from Post
MOSCOW: Amid the fluctuating peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, General Oleg Salyukov, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces, has been removed from his position, according to reports.
According to reports,Oleg Salyukov was a long-time associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who personally decided to remove him from the post. This decision comes at a time when Russia faces international pressure over the Ukraine war and its military strategy. Salyukov had been the army chief since 2014 and has now been appointed as Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
General Salyukov’s tenure was marked by the integration of modern weaponry and strategic reforms. However, a surprise attack by Ukraine in the Kursk region in 2024 raised serious questions about Russia’s border security. This incident intensified pressure on Putin to overhaul ground strategies. No announcement has been made regarding Salyukov’s successor.
This change is considered significant within the Defense Ministry as just days ago, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was replaced by economic expert Andrei Belousov as the new Defense Minister.
