Sonia Gandhi to be main congress speaker on Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament today

 NEW DELHI: Women's Reservation Bill will be discussed in the Lok Sabha today. Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi will be the main speaker on behalf of her party for the debate.

The Women's Reservation Bill, which provides for 33 per cent quota for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and will be discussed in the House on Wednesday.

The Union Cabinet approved the Women's Reservation Bill on Monday. On Tuesday, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the bill in the first meeting of the Lok Sabha in the new Parliament House. This bill has been named Nari Shakti Vandan Act.

 

 In 2008,Manmohan Singh led UPA government introduced the bill in the Rajya Sabha and it was passed in 2010. However, the bill was never put up for consideration in the Lok Sabha.

Introducing the bill in the House, Meghawal said, "This bill is regarding women empowerment. By amending Article 239AA of the Constitution, 33 percent seats will be reserved for women in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.

Arjun Meghwal also said that after the Nari Shakti Vandan Act is passed, the number of seats for women in the Lok Sabha will increase to 181. The bill will be discussed in the House on Wednesday, September 20 to pass it. Government sources said that it will be raised in the Rajya Sabha on September 21.
