Trump, Putin agree on partial ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to temporarily halt attacks on energy and infrastructure targets in Ukraine after a lengthy telephone call with US President Donald Trump yesterday.

The White House and the Kremlin both have confirmed this. The White House said the highly anticipated phone call between the two Presidents began as the Trump administration looked to persuade the Russian leader to sign off on a 30-day ceasefire proposal with Ukraine as a possible pathway to end the war. The two leaders also discussed bilateral relations and the situation in West Asia. However, the plan agreed by them is yet to be affirmed by the Ukraine.

On the other hand, the Kremlin said, the Russian president is resistant to a fuller ceasefire adding that several significant points were raised on the issue during the call.

President Donald Trump said his call with the Russian President was very good and said the Kremlin’s agreement to pause attacks on Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure targets is a big thing. He suggested that after this call, a full ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine could follow.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia is not ready to end the war in Ukraine and is not ready for a ceasefire. He said this in a news conference, a few hours after President Donald Trump’s call with his Russian counterpart.
