'Will rollback Agnipath scheme, give free electricity to farmers if comes to power in 2024: KCR

KHAMAM: Setting the stage for an anti-BJP alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday said that if the 'BRS-proposed  government (comes to power, then after the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, farmers across the country will be given free electricity.

This was the first major rally after TRS was renamed as BRS.

Addressing the party's first public meeting in Khammam, Telangana, he said that if the BRS is voted to power, the Agneepath scheme for recruitment in the armed forces will be scrapped.

The public meeting has a lot of political significance as it is the first public meeting after TRS decided to change its name to national as BRS. It was also attended by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and CPI's D Raja.

Rao termed the Centre's 'Make in India' initiative as a 'failure' and said welfare schemes like 'Rythu Bandhu' should be implemented across the country. He also targeted the BJP and the Congress, alleging that both the parties were responsible for the inter-state water issues.

Addressing the rally first, Kerala CM Vijayan said the public meeting  takes  place at a time when "democracy is under attack by those sitting at the centre". He also lauded KCR for taking the initiative of bringing together like-minded chief ministers and starting a people's movement. CM Vijayan extended his state's support to the pro-policies being undertaken by the Telangana government.

Vijayan claimed that elected governments were being toppled and attempts were being made to portray Hindi as the national language, sidelining mother tongues. He said, “The unity of the country is threatened by the imposition of Hindi by eliminating the mother tongue.”

Highlighting the recent controversy over Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's remarks on the issue of judiciary versus the powers of the legislature, Vijayan said the judiciary was also under attack.

Before reaching Khammam, KCR and top opposition leaders visited Yadagirigutta in two helicopters to offer prayers at a temple. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Kerala Chief Minister Vijayan, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav, CPI National General Secretary D. Raja, State Ministers Vemula Prashant Reddy and Talasani Srinivas Yadav, MP Joginpalli Santosh Kumar and MLC K. Poetry was also present.
