39 killed, 9 injured in China building fire

BEIJING: More than 39 people died and nine were injured in a fire in a building in China's Jiangxi province on Wednesday. There is a possibility that some people are still trapped in the building,according to reports.

The state news agency Xinhua quoted the local fire emergency headquarters as saying that the fire broke out in a shop on the ground floor in Xinyue city, which took a serious form.

The agency said that at least 39 people were killed and nine others were injured in the accident. In a video released, thick smoke is seen coming out of the building. Fire engines and ambulances are present at the spot.

According to reports, the building where the fire broke out housed an internet café and training institute. The cause of the fire is not yet clear and investigation is ongoing in this regard.

Fires are common in China due to lax enforcement of building construction and safety standards. On January 20, 13 students were killed in a fire at a school dormitory in central China's Henan province.
