Advertisement claims should be shown prominently, not as hashtags or links: Consumer Affairs Secretary

New Delhi, Feb 27, (Fast Mail News):-- In the interest of consumers, information or claims (disclosures) in advertisements should be prominently displayed, not as hashtags or links.

 

Addressing an event on Monday, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said that information or claims (disclosure) in advertisements should be shown prominently and not in the form of hashtags or links. He was addressing the program organized by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) in Mumbai through video conferencing. He also stressed the importance of handling social media advertising responsibly. He said that it is the responsibility of the manufacturers, service providers, advertisers and advertising agencies to ensure that their advertisements do not mislead the consumer.

 

 According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Singh said that there are more than 50 crore social media users in the country. In such a situation, advertisements should be displayed with responsibility. He said that influential and popular persons need to disclose to advertisers every fact which is likely to affect the credibility of their representation. Singh said that these information should be given in such a way that the consumer cannot ignore them and they should not be kept in the middle of many hashtags and links.

 

The Consumer Secretary said that during the advertisement in photographs, these information should be clearly visible above the picture. Also, these information should be given through both audio-visual (video-audio) medium during advertisement in video. Along wth this, information should be given continuously and at appropriate places during live telecast.
