Democracy is not BJP's private property : Mamata Banerjee

(Fast Mail):--The political uproar continues in Kolkata over the ED raid on the I-PAC office. Meanwhile, on Friday, eight Trinamool Congress MPs staged a protest outside the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital, following which the police detained them.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee targeting the central government said,” I strongly condemn the shameful and wrong treatment meted out to our MPs. Dragging elected representatives on the streets for exercising their democratic right to protest outside the Home Minister's office is not law enforcement. It is arrogance in uniform. This is democracy, not the BJP's private property.

She further wrote that democracy does not run on the convenience or comfort of those in power. When BJP leaders protest, they expect red carpets and special facilities. When opposition MPs raise their voice, they are dragged, detained, and humiliated.

Mamata Banerjee further wrote that it should be clear that respect is mutual. “You respect us, and we respect you. You drag us on the streets, and we will bring you back to the constitutional ideals of tolerance, dissent, and democratic morality. This is our India. We are citizens by right, not at the mercy of any chair, badge, or position of power. No government, no party, and no Home Minister can decide who deserves dignity in a democracy”.

The Trinamool Congress MPs who participated in the protest included Derek O'Brien, Shatabdi Roy, Mahua Moitra, Bapi Haldar, Saket Gokhale, Pratima Mandal, Kirti Azad, and Dr. Sharmila Sarkar Dhar.

During the protest, the TMC MPs raised slogans and alleged that the BJP-led central government is misusing probe agencies to harass opposition parties ahead of elections. The MPs were also seen with posters to express their protest.
