Gujarat riots: All accused including Maya Kodnani acquitted in Naroda village massacre case

 NEW DELHI: The court has acquitted all the accused in the Naroda village massacre case during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The case was heard  in the special court of Ahmedabad. Significantly, Babu Bajrangi and Maya Kodnani were also accused in this case. Maya Kodnani has been a minister in the Gujarat government.  11 people were killed in this incident along with many others were injured.

Home Minister Amit Shah had appeared as a defense witness for Ms. Kodnani in 2017. The counsel for the acquitted told reporters outside the court today that all the accused have been acquitted.

 

 

At least 11 people were killed during rioting in the Naroda Gam area of Ahmedabad city on 28 February 2002, a day after 58 passengers returning from Ayodhya were killed in a train burning incident in Godhra.

A Gujarat court has acquitted all 26 people accused of gang rape and murder of over 12 members of the minority community in separate incidents in Kalol during the 2002 communal riots for lack of evidence. Of the total 39 accused, 13 died during the pendency of the case and the trial against them was abated.

 Ms Kodnani was also convicted in the Naroda Patiya riots case in which 97 people were massacred and was sentenced to 28 years. She was later discharged by the Gujarat High Court.
