Kharge: Government is in a hurry to implement Women's Reservation Law for political gains

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that calling a special session of Parliament in between state elections strengthens the perception that the government is in a hurry to implement the Women's Reservation Law for "political gains".

In a letter to Prime Minister Modi, Kharge has reiterated his demand to convene an all-party meeting after 29 April to discuss the delimitation issue. This delimitation is being linked with amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023.

Kharge's letter comes in response to Prime Minister Modi's letter in which he mentioned calling a special session of Parliament from 16 April for discussions on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, in a letter written to Modi on Saturday, said, "I have just received your letter regarding the special session of Parliament for discussions on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam from 16 April."

Kharge said, "As you know, the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023 was passed unanimously by Parliament in September 2023. At that time, on behalf of the Indian National Congress, I had demanded that this important law should be implemented with immediate effect."

The Congress President said that although the Prime Minister has mentioned in his letter that there was broad consensus for its immediate implementation, it was still not implemented.

He said, "30 months have passed since then and now a special session has been called without taking us into confidence, and your government is once again seeking our cooperation without providing any information about delimitation. You can understand that it is impossible to have any meaningful discussion on this historic law without details of delimitation and other aspects."
