Sonia Gandhi stands in support of women's reservation bill, says this is a poignant moment of my life

NEW DELHI:Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi announced her support for the Women's Reservation Bill at the beginning of her speech in the Lok Sabha today.

On this occasion, she remembered her husband and former PM Rajiv Gandhi saying that this is a very touching moment in my life. For the first time, the constitutional amendment to ensure women's participation in local bodies was brought by my life partner Rajiv Gandhiji, which failed in the Rajya Sabha by 7 votes. Later, it was passed by the Congress government under the leadership of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Today, the result is that we have 15 lakh elected women leaders through local bodies across the country. Rajiv Gandhi ji's dream has so far been only half fulfilled. That will be accomplished with the passing of this bill.

She said that from the smoky kitchen to the brightly lit stadium, the journey of the Indian woman has been very long but at last she has reached the destination. Sonia said that from Sarojini Naidu, Suchita Kripalani, Aruna Asif Ali, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, Princess Amrit Kaur and lakhs of women along with them till date, women have always supported Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Baba in difficult times. The dreams of Saheb Ambedkar and Maulana Azad have been brought to life. The personality of Indira Gandhi ji is a very bright and living example.
