21 dead as houseboat capsizes in Kerala, rescue operation underway

THIRUANATHPURAM: At least
 21 people, mostly children, have died after a houseboat carrying about 30 passengers capsized near Tuvalthiram beach in Tanur area of Malappuram district in Kerala on Sunday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the accident and announced a compensation of two lakh rupees to the families of the deceased.

PM Modi has  in his tweet said, "I am saddened by the death of people in the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia amount of Rs two lakh from PMNRF will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased”.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a statement condoling the deaths and directed the Malappuram District Collector to launch a coordinated emergency rescue operation. The statement said that fire and police units, officials of revenue and health departments and local people of Tanur and Tirur areas of the district are involved in the rescue operation. It is also said that Minister Abdurrahman and Rias will coordinate the rescue operation.

 

 

 At the same time, Kerala Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Rias has also expressed grief over this incident. After getting the information about the incident, he said that the people who have died in this accident are especially children. According to the information received, the incident took place when the children were riding the houseboat during the school holidays. There are still reports of missing children, for whom special operations are being conducted.

The police arrived at the scene and are currently investigating the whole matter. The local people are also being questioned to find out how the incident happened. A senior police officer said about the incident that the accident happened at around 7pm in the evening. So far, the people who were pulled out of the water have been admitted to nearby private and government hospitals where some people are being treated. He said that the exact cause of the accident could not be known at the moment. We are currently investigating the entire incident.
