DHENKANAL:An one month old elephant calf who was dumped by his herd and was lodged at Balaram Prasad forest beat house was finally shifted to Nandan Kanan last night and is in good health.
“The elephant calf was in a good health condition and was under constant monitoring by a panel of doctors in beat house has been finally shifted to Nandan Kanan.The calf had been lodged in Balaram Prasad beat house since last Friday with constant medical supervision.As its herd didn’t accept it despite several attempts we had no other options but to shift it to Nandan Kanan.Finally,it was shifted to Nandan Kanan last night in a good health condition”,said Angul DFO Vivek Kumar.
On Thursday last,n an elephant calf got accidentally separated from its herd in Gunthagadia forest and entered the village along with village cattle.The villagers of Gunthagadia offered it food and water and also touched it several times.They then informed forest department officials of Talcher Range who rushed to the spot immediately.The forest officials tried to push the calf into the herd in jungle but the herd didn't accept it.Several attempts were made by forest officials but they didn’t succeed.
Talcher range officer Sukanti Dei said when herd didn’t receive the calf there was no option left with them other than lodging them in Balaram Prasad beat House.She said doctors were called in to examine its health and found that it was intact.Finally a decision was made to shift it to either to Kapilash rescue centre or to nandan kanan.The calf was sent to Nandan Kanan finally.
