(Fast Mail):- Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused the Election Commission of India of becoming a puppet in the hands of the Modi government, alleging that the issue of ‘irregularities’ in the electoral process was raised before the commission but no action was taken. Specifically mentioning irregularities in last year’s ’s Maharashtra Assembly elections, he demanded that elections be conducted using paper ballots.
Addressing reporters at the Congress headquarters ‘Indira Bhawan,’ Kharge said, “The Election Commission has become a puppet in the hands of the government. You have a puppet, and you (Prime Minister Modi) claim to be winning elections. You are not winning elections; your machines are winning.” He alleged flaws in the electoral process in Maharashtra.
Kharge added, “We had earlier demanded paper ballots from the Election Commission. Did they implement it? Whatever Modi ji says, you (the Commission) do. Thank you for what you’re doing for Modi ji.” Responding to a question, he said, “We tried our best, legally. If the government has decided to continue with the mistakes being made, and the Commission follows their directions, then the only remedy lies with the people.” We will go to the people repeatedly. We will keep fighting.”
Emphasizing his point, Kharge said, “When the whole world is using paper ballots, why aren’t you?” Our demand is that elections be conducted with paper ballots. Countries like America, Australia, Britain, and many others hold elections with paper ballots. We will continue to demand the removal of EVM machines and the use of paper ballots for elections.”
