IIT Bombay Student Commits Suicide by Jumping Off Hostel Building

An 18-year-old student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay) Mumbai has allegedly died by jumping off from the seventh floor of the institute's hostel in Powai. According to reports, the student was from Ahmedabad in Gujarat and was studying in the first year of chemical engineering at IIT.

According to police, the student had fallen from the seventh floor at 11:30 am on Sunday. Police has not received any suicide note from the spot.

Meanwhile,some students have alleged that the scheduled caste student was allegedly being discriminated against in the campus. Due to this he took the step of suicide. At present, the police have registered a case of accidental death. The case is being investigated,police said.

Police said that Darshan Solanki, a BTech student, was a resident of Ahmedabad. He had enrolled in this course three months back. His first semester exams were over on Saturday. Powai police is trying to find out whether the student took such a drastic step under the pressure of studies.

 

 

 APPSC,Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, IIT Bombay tweeted: "We condole the demise of Darshan Solanki, an 18-year-old Dalit student. He had joined IIT Bombay for his B.Tech 3 months ago. We must understand that  this is not an individual or private issue, but an institutional murder."

Another tweet said, "Despite our complaints, the institute has not cared to make the campus inclusive and safe for Dalit Bahujan Adivasi students. First year students are the worst hit in terms of anti-reservation sentiments and taunts for non-qualification, face harassment."

Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle alleged in an Instagram post that "It is no hidden fact that students from the SC/ST community face extreme harassment and discrimination on campus from the faculties and staff".

SSP Budhan Sawant said that on the basis of primary information, we have registered a case of accidental death. The investigation  is going on. He said, 'Prima facie it seems that Darshan was in mental depression. The matter is being investigated from every angle. The police is also ascertaining whether he committed suicide because of the exam. However, no suicide note has been found. That is why the cause of death could not be clarified,said olice.
