Jairam Ramesh recalls 1940 Working Committee meeting, takes dig at RSS!

PATNA: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, ahead of the party Working Committee meeting in Patna on Wednesday, referenced that 1940 Working Committee meeting in which a commitment was made on the constitution of independent India.

Taking a swipe at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Jairam Ramesh said that the organization,is now celebrating the centenary of its founding, had opposed the constitution.

The Congress Working Committee meeting in 1940 was held in Ramgarh, Bihar (now in Jharkhand).

In its Ramgarh session held in mid-March 1940, the Working Committee passed its historic resolution, which for the first time formally committed the Congress to the formation of a Constituent Assembly to frame and adopt a Constitution for a free and independent India.

Without naming the RSS, he said that the institution which had opposed the constitution is now celebrating its centenary year.

The Congress leader mentioned the book titled 'Constituent Assembly and Our Demand', whose foreword was written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

He said, "At the time of the Working Committee's Ramgarh meeting in March 1940, a book was published. It was written by Jai Gopal Narang and its foreword was written by the person who remained the strongest advocate of such a Constituent Assembly for nearly a decade. Here is Nehru's foreword."
