Madhya Pradesh: Umang Singhar Alleges 'Vote Theft' in Assembly Elections, Reveals Details of 27 Seats

BHOPAL: Amid allegations by opposition parties regarding irregularities in voter lists across several states, the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, today alleged that votes were stolen in 27 constituencies during the assembly elections to benefit the BJP.

Providing details of these seats, he claimed that the increase in voter numbers in these constituencies was significantly higher than the margin by which Congress candidates lost.

Addressing a press conference, Umang Singhar presented data-driven graphics and statistics, claiming that lakhs of voters were added just months before the elections. In constituencies where Congress candidates lost by narrow margins, the voter increase was found to be much higher than the margin of defeat.

He stated, “Vote theft occurred in more than 27 seats in the state, and this was done to provide undue advantage to the BJP.”

On Tuesday, Singhar shared detailed information about the assembly elections with reporters, presenting a table of 27 constituencies.

He said that in the 2023 assembly elections, Congress candidates in these 27 constituencies lost by very narrow margins. In those same areas, the voter increase was significantly higher than the margin of defeat, done to unfairly benefit the BJP.

The Leader of Opposition claimed that between January 5 and August 2, 2023 in seven months time, approximately 4.64 lakh voters were added. Similarly, between August 2 and October 4, 2023, in just two months, 16.05 lakh voters were added, meaning 26,000 voters were added daily.

He emphasized, “These are not just numbers; this is a fight to protect democracy.”

He further stated, “Rahul Gandhi’s revelation about vote theft has shaken the country. Madhya Pradesh has also been a major victim of this planned electoral conspiracy.”

Umang Singhar revealed that on June 9, 2023, the Election Commission of India instructed the Chief Electoral Officers of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana not to publish or share details of additions, deletions, and amendments made to the voter list between January 1 and June 30, 2023.

He said that the supplementary voter lists released by the Election Commission before elections do not disclose how many names were added or removed. The lists provided to political parties are five to seven months old.

Singhar claimed that after the release of the main voter list in the state, 16 lakh votes were added, meaning an increase of 10,000 votes per seat in two months. This margin is much higher than the difference by which Congress lost.

Accusing the Election Commission, Singhar said that as per the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission’s order dated December 2, 2022, districts were instructed to remove 8,51,564 fake and duplicate entries. However, no district official made the removal report public, and the related data was not provided even through RTI.

Singhar stated that the Election Commission cites “confidentiality” and “file size” as excuses for not including photos in the online voter list. However, when the government promotes its schemes, photos and videos of beneficiaries are widely publicized in documents and advertisements.

He questioned, “If there is no breach of confidentiality there, why aren’t photos included in the voter list for transparency?”

He demanded that the Election Commission halt the final voter list, obtain signatures from all political parties on the final published list, and impose a ban on any changes until the elections are completed.
