Manipur: Internet Suspended, Curfew Imposed in Bishnupur Following Arrest of Meitei Leader

IMPHAL: Following the alleged arrest of a leader of the Meitei extremist organization ‘Arambai Tenggol,’ widespread protests erupted in Imphal East and Imphal West districts, leading to the suspension of internet and mobile data services for five days in the territorial jurisdiction of five valley districts in Manipur.

In an order issued late Saturday night, Manipur’s Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, stated, “In view of the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, particularly in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements may extensively use social media to spread images, abusive language, and hate-inducing video messages that could inflame public sentiments, thereby severely impacting the law and order situation in Manipur.”

The order further stated, “There is a risk of inflammatory content and false rumors being disseminated through social media/mobile services, SMS services, and dongle services, which could result in damage to public and private property, loss of life and property, and widespread disruption of public peace and communal harmony.”

Earlier on Saturday night, protests broke out in parts of Imphal following the alleged arrest of a leader of the Meitei extremist organization Arambai Tenggol. Protesters, demanding the immediate release of the leader, burned tires and old furniture during demonstrations on a major road in Kwakeithel and Uripok in Imphal West district. To bring the situation under control, additional security forces led by senior officials have been deployed in both Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Police officials have remained silent on the alleged arrest of the Arambai Tenggol leader.
