Gandhi Jayanti 2023: Who called Gandhiji as Mahatma, the Father of the Nation and why? Know the story

 NEW DELHI: Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated with great pomp every year on 2 October across India and the world.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His father's name was Karamchand Gandhi and mother's name was Putli Bai. Gandhi was the youngest child of his parents.

The name Gandhi was also given as the name and title of Bapu, Father of the Nation and Mahatma. Gandhiji actively participated in the independence movement and  he led the Indian independence movement. Gandhi always followed non-violence during the freedom movement.

The life of Gandhi, who sacrificed everything in the freedom struggle, was very simple and full of simplicity. Gandhiji's life was no less than that of a seeker. Gandhi, who followed the rules of simple living and high thinking, chose the path of truth and non-violence and also inspired people. With a dhoti and a stick, Gandhi travelled through many marches and even sent to prisons. He tried to bring harmony in the society, that is why people started lovingly calling Gandhi as Bapu (father figure). Let us tell you that Gandhiji kept talking about love, harmony and non-violence till the last moments of his death.

 

 

 Gandhi was first called the Father of the Nation by Subhash Chandra Bose. Subhash Chandra Bose honored Gandhi by calling him the Father of the Nation. While saying this he had said that the Father of the Nation had an important contribution in the freedom movement. After this, the word Father of the Nation started being commonly used for Gandhi.

The word Mahatma was given to Gandhiji for the first time by Rabindranath Tagore. According to some historians, for the first time Gandhiji was addressed as Mahatma by Vaidya Jeevan Ram Kalidas in 1915. According to some historians, for the first time Gandhiji was given the title of Mahatma by Rabindranath Tagore. Since then, words like Father of the Nation and Mahatma started being used for Gandhiji.
