Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli Resigns Amid Escalating Violence, Protesters Set Parliament Building on Fire

 KATHMANDU: Violent anti-government protests led by students continued in Nepal for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Amid the unrest, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation. Protesters stormed the parliament building, setting fire to both houses, and have now taken control of the entire complex.

Protesters Set Fire to PM Oli’s Residence

Demonstrators, rallying under the ‘Gen Z’ banner and demanding Oli’s resignation, chanted slogans like “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP is a thief, leave the country) and “Take action against corrupt leaders” across various parts of the capital.

The situation in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, remains highly tense, prompting the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport.

Protesters have been on the streets since morning, defying restrictions on public gatherings. Demonstrations were reported in Kathmandu’s Kalanki, Kalimati, Tahachal, and Baneshwor areas, as well as Chyasal, Chapagaon, and Thecho in Lalitpur district.

 

 The majority of protesters are students, chanting slogans like “Don’t kill students.” According to media reports, police fired on protesters, injuring four people. Eyewitnesses reported that young protesters pelted stones at the residence of Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi, Lalitpur, who had ordered the social media ban.

Protesters also vandalized the residence of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, and demonstrated outside the home of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu.Allegations of Corruption Against Nepal Government

The ‘Gen Z’ group, which has been campaigning against corruption, has used social media platforms like Reddit and Instagram to highlight the extravagant lifestyles of the children of ministers and other influential figures. They have posted videos and photos questioning the sources of wealth, alleging that it is obtained through corrupt means.

The group claims that the ban on social media sites is an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.The Nepal government had imposed a ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook and X, for failing to register with authorities. However, late Monday night, the government lifted the ban in an effort to quell public anger.

According to ‘Gen Z’ activists, their demands include guarantees for freedom of expression and setting a retirement age for individuals holding political positions.19 Protesters Killed

On Monday, September 8, 2025, 19 youths, including a 12-year-old student, were killed, and over 300 were injured due to police firing, baton charges, and tear gas used to disperse protesters opposing widespread corruption and the social media ban.
