Peafowls and deer rescued from captivity in Chhendipada

 ANGUL: Four peafowl and one four horned antelope who were held captive in cages at Maa Bayani Peetha at Patrapada in Chhendipada forest range were rescued by forest officials after wildlife activists raised issue with Principal Chief Conservator of forests(Wildlife).

A forest team led by Chhendipada ranger SS Mohapatra swoop down on the peetha and managed to rescue all these five wild animals from the cages.These animals were coming on the scheduled-A were brought to Chhendipada range office where doctors gave treatment while the deer is having the age of around three years,the birds are of age of around the same three years.

The ranger said initially these animals are camped in the range office and later on,they will be shifted to zoos anywhere in the state. The rescue of these animals have brought a relief wildlife activists in the state.The action of the forest department was initiated after one wildlife activist Subhendu Mallik of Khordha raised the matter with the PCCCF that there has been a gross violation of  wildlife  protection Act in Chhendipada.He sent in EMAIL that a park maintained by Maa Bayani temple  at Patrapada has made four peafowls and one four-horned antelopes under confinement for display purpose to visitors.

 

 As these listed under scheduled one of WLPA they cannot be kept under confinement. This is clear violation of section-9 and section38 of WLPA.He further stated that these scheduled species are kept under unscientific housing in one enclosure where peacock and deer were housed.Pointing out that  about the wellbeing of the animals.

Mallick has requested PCCCF to immediately rescue these scheduled species from captivity and take legal action against those involved in it.
