US Shutdown Crisis Deepens, President Trump Ready to Negotiate with Democrats on Healthcare

WASHINGTON:The government shutdown in the United States has impacted air travel, with Burbank Airport operating without air traffic controllers due to staff shortages.

The crisis has deepened as the Senate rejected a funding bill again, marking the shutdown's entry into its second week.

Two conflicting measures to fund the government and end the shutdown failed for the fifth time in the Senate on Monday.

Amid this deadlock, President Donald J. Trump has softened his stance and agreed to negotiate with Democrats.

According to a CBS News report, the standoff over ending the government shutdown is likely to extend for another week, with both parties blaming each other for funding cuts.

Republican efforts in the Senate have so far been unsuccessful. Democratic leaders are firm on their demand that any funding measure include an extension of health insurance tax credits.

Speaker Mike Johnson is frustrated with the current situation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer argued on Sunday that resolving the shutdown would only be possible through a meeting between congressional leaders and the president.

President Trump stated that progress is being made toward a resolution. Congressional Democrats have emphasized expanding health insurance tax credits as part of any agreement, while Republicans insist that healthcare discussions should occur only after the shutdown ends.

Meanwhile, due to staff shortages, Hollywood Burbank Airport in Southern California is operating without air traffic controllers. California Governor Gavin Newsom has blamed the government shutdown for this situation.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an advisory stating that the airport is likely to have no air traffic controllers from 4:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Newsom posted on X on Monday, targeting President Trump: "Thanks to YOUR government shutdown, there are ZERO air traffic controllers at Burbank Airport from 4:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. today."

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy responded by blaming Democrats for the shutdown, writing on X: "If you want to blame someone, look in the mirror. We all know that's your favorite thing to do."

Trump has said he is ready to negotiate with Democrats on healthcare, but only if they vote to provide funding.

In a Truth Social post, the president wrote, "I would be happy to work with Democrats on their failed healthcare policies or any other issue, but first, they must allow our government to reopen."

Hours later, he added that negotiations with Democrats are ongoing and could yield very good results. Senate Minority Leader and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer stated that the president's remarks "are not true" and that no talks are happening with the White House.
