Asaram Bapu sentenced life imprisonment on charges of rape, unnatural sex

GANDHI NAGAR:Asaram Bapu has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Gandhinagar court of Gujarat in the case of student rape. Sessions Court DK Soni convicted Asaram on Monday. The sentence was to be decided on Tuesday. Asaram has been in jail since 2013. Asaram has been convicted under IPC sections 376 (2) (c), 377 (unnatural sex) and illegal hostage taking.

81-year-old Asaram Bapu is currently in Jodhpur jail. At the same time, a separate case is going on against Narayan Sai in Surat court. Two sisters had filed a complaint against Asaram and his son, alleging that they were raped between 1997 and 2006 at the Motera ashram run by Asaram and his son.

The Surat-based girls filed a case against Asaram and seven others in October 2013, alleging rape and illegal imprisonment. The younger sister filed a complaint against Narayan Sai and the elder sister filed a complaint against Asaram. One of the accused died during the trial. A charge sheet was filed in the case in July 2014.

Asaram was arrested on 31 August 2013 by Jodhpur police in another case of rape. Since then he has been in jail. Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment in another case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018 in a Jodhpur court for raping a student in 2013.

Apart from Asaram Bapu, his wife, son and three other accused in the case were acquitted by the court on Monday due to lack of evidence. Asaram has been sentenced to life imprisonment under sections 376 and 377 in the sexual harassment case. Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar said that the court has ordered an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the victim.
