US President Trump Issues Fresh Threat on 'Reciprocal Tariff,' Says 'We Will Do Whatever We Want'

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has issued fresh threat over the reciprocal tariff, clarifying that the July 9 tariff deadline is not fixed. He stated that the timeline could be extended or shortened, depending on trade negotiations with different countries.

At a press conference, Trump emphasized, "We can change our decision whenever we want. We can extend it or expedite it. I would prefer to act quickly and send a letter to everyone—congratulations, you’re now paying a 25 percent tax."

Earlier on Thursday, the US sent a new trade proposal to the European Union, while India dispatched a delegation to Washington for trade talks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that trade agreements might take some time, but significant deals could be finalized by Labor Day (early September).

In April 2025, President Trump announced the implementation of a reciprocal tariff system on nearly all foreign imports. Under this system, goods subject to tariffs exceeding 10 percent were granted a 90-day exemption to allow countries to negotiate agreements. This exemption is set to expire on July 8.
