Delhi court sends K Kavitha to judicial custody till April 23: ‘not CBI custody, but BJP custody’

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday sent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislator K Kavitha, who was arrested in the Delhi excise policy case, to judicial custody till April 23. On Friday she was sent to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody till April 15.

While the CBI submitted in court that Kavitha was not responding to them, Advocate Nitesh Rana representing Kavitha said there were no grounds to send her to judicial custody. Kavitha was arrested by the CBI on April 11.

Stating in its remand papers that her custody with the CBI wasn’t needed, the agency said Kavitha “did not co-operate with the investigation and deliberately gave evasive replies contrary to the evidence on record”.

The CBI also said the BRS leader was a very influential person and that there were credible reasons to believe that she may influence witnesses or tamper with the evidence thereby hampering the ongoing investigation.

While leaving the courtroom of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, the BRS legislator said that this was not “CBI custody, but BJP custody”.

On Friday, while seeking her custody for five days, the CBI had submitted in its remand papers that Kavitha “forced” approver Sarath Chandra Reddy to pay Rs 14 crore for agricultural land in Telangana and asked him to pay Rs 25 crore for five liquor retail zones in Delhi.

Kavitha, who is accused of allegedly paying Rs 100 crore to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders in return for liquor licences in the national capital, was lodged in Tihar jail following her arrest on March 15 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED is probing allegations of money laundering in the Delhi excise policy case. While in judicial custody, she was also interrogated by the CBI.
