In a First in 12 Years, China's Ji May Skip BRICS Summit

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in Brazil next month, according to a media report.

If this happens, it would mark the first time since assuming office 12 years ago that Xi will miss a meeting of the group of emerging economies.

Hong Kong’s daily newspaper South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday, citing multiple sources, that Xi will not attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Instead, Chinese Premier and Xi’s confidant Li Qiang will participate in the summit scheduled for July 6-7. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the BRICS Summit.

BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has expanded to include five additional members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Last year’s BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, was considered significant as it marked the first meeting between Modi and Xi after a four-year military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

If Xi Jinping does not attend the Rio de Janeiro summit, the next opportunity for a Xi-Modi meeting could be at the SCO Summit to be held in China.

China, the current chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), is planning to host its summit in the coming months.
