Lahore reaches the top in list of most polluted in the world, govt imposes 'smog' emergency

LAHORE:The Global Air Quality Monitoring Forum has placed Lahore city of Pakistan at the top in the list of polluted, according to a report.

The government has imposed smog emergency in Punjab province of Pakistan after the Lahore High Court's order to immediately impose "smog emergency" in Lahore. Everyone has been instructed to wear masks for at least 1 month,it is said.

The caretaker government of Pakistan's Punjab province on Wednesday imposed a "smog emergency" in the state, as its capital Lahore remains one of the most polluted cities in the world. The government took the decision in the wake of the Lahore High Court's order to immediately impose "smog emergency" in Lahore due to the air quality index continuing to remain hazardous.

Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Karim on Wednesday had rapped the Lahore Commissioner for failure to control air pollution. The judge had said, "Smog is not my personal problem, but it is a matter of concern for the lives of our children. You are the custodian of the city of Lahore. Look what you have done with it. You should be ashamed of the condition of Lahore." " Lahore is one of the most polluted cities in the world due to hazardous air quality conditions.

According to the report of global air quality monitoring platform 'IQ Air', the air quality index (AQI) in the provincial capital Lahore reached 447 on Monday. It is considered safe to breathe air when AQI is below 50. Punjab's acting Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi said, "Smog emergency has been imposed across Punjab and wearing of masks has been declared mandatory for boys and girls in all government and private schools for a month."
