BJP Imposing ‘Linguistic Emergency’ in Maharashtra : Uddhav Thackeray

MUMBAI: Amid the controversy over the directive to teach Hindi in Maharashtra schools, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday accused the BJP of attempting to create divisions among people based on language and imposing a ‘linguistic emergency’ in Maharashtra. Additionally, Thackeray announced a public meeting on July 7 at Azad Maidan regarding the Hindi issue.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister stated that his party is not opposed to Hindi but is firmly against imposing the language in a predominantly Marathi-speaking state. He alleged that the BJP is trying to divide people on the basis of language.

Addressing the controversy over the order to teach Hindi to students from classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools, Thackeray said, “We do not oppose or hate any language, but that does not mean we will allow any language to be imposed.”

Taking a dig at his former ally, he claimed, “The BJP is attempting to create divisions among people based on language.” Thackeray further alleged that the BJP has a hidden agenda to impose Hindi. The former Chief Minister also claimed, “The ruling party is imposing a linguistic emergency.”
