LOS ANGELES: The death toll rises to 10 in shotting incident during Chinese New Year celebration in Los Angeles. Hu Can Tran, the 72-year-old suspect in the attack, was found dead inside a van. Police say that after being surrounded, he probably shot himself.
A 72-year-old man suddenly opened fire at a Chinese New Year party in Monterey Park in Los Angeles, California yesterday. The police gheraoed him and as the officers approached him, they heard gunshots.
"The suspect shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.
The sheriff confirmed that there are no other suspects in the mass shooting, and said that the motive for the attack is not yet known. "The investigation is ongoing,"
Officials said detectives were reviewing surveillance video and did not yet know if the suspect was targeting any particular group.
Sheriff Luna previously said, "We don't know if this is a hate crime specifically defined by law, but who walks into a dance hall and shoots 20 people?"
The White House said in a statement that the US President has ordered all American flags on public buildings to be flown at half-mast in honor of the victims of the mass shooting.
Thousands of people gathered for the largest two-day Chinese New Year celebration in Southern California. The second day of the celebration was canceled after the attack.
The deadliest shooting in the US since a shooter in Texas killed 22 people at a primary school in May has made headlines around the world.
According to the Gun Violence Archive website, there were 647 mass shootings last year in which at least four people were shot by a single shooter.
Across America, more than 44,000 people were killed by gunfire in 2022, more than half of which were suicides.
