Congress slams centre over World Bank report on poverty and inequality in India

NEW DELHI: The Congress party on Sunday expressed concern over a recent World Bank report stating that poverty and inequality in India remain alarmingly high.

The party urged the central government to take various steps, including reform of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and ending 'Corporate Favouritism'.

Citing the World Bank's April 2025 brief on poverty and inequality in India, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said that three months after the brief's release, the Narendra Modi government's cheerleaders are misrepresenting the report's data to falsely claim that India is among the most equal societies in the world.

He recalled that on April 27, the Congress had highlighted some key concerns raised in the World Bank report in a statement.

The Congress leader said, “A serious effort should be made to address the report.”

He added that the World Bank report highlights that wage inequality in India is high.
