Congress Attacks Modi Government Over Trump's Claim of Blocking Apple in India

NEW DELHI: Congress party has criticised the Modi government over its silence on US President Donald Trump's recent claim that he told Apple CEO Tim Cook not to manufacture iPhones in India. Congress questioned where the Modi government stands and whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will condemn this statement.

In a post on X, Congress wrote, "I clearly told Apple CEO Tim Cook—do not manufacture iPhones in India. This is what US President Donald Trump is saying in Qatar. Where is the Modi government? Will the Prime Minister condemn this statement? First, Trump attacked our sovereignty, even claiming that India agreed to a ceasefire for trade, and now he is eyeing our investments. The Modi government must issue a statement to clarify the situation."

During his Qatar visit, Trump also claimed that India offered to remove all tariffs on American goods. Congress criticized PM Modi's silence on this claim as well. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "The Commerce Minister is in Washington, DC, and President Trump has made another big announcement from Doha. Our Prime Minister is completely silent. What has he agreed to? And how is this related to stopping Operation Sindoor?"

At a trade roundtable in Doha, Trump said he had a "slight problem" with Apple CEO Tim Cook and told him he did not want Apple to manufacture iPhones in India. Trump stated, "I told him (Cook), my friend, I’m treating you very well. You’re bringing in $500 billion, but now I hear you’re manufacturing in India. I don’t want you to manufacture in India. If you want to take care of India, you can manufacture in India… because India is one of the highest tariff countries in the world, so selling in India is very difficult."

Trump further said, "They (India) offered us a deal where they agreed not to charge us any tariffs. I said, ‘Tim, we’re treating you very well, we’ve put up with all the plants you’ve built in China for years. However, we’re not interested in your manufacturing in India. India can take care of itself.'" Trump’s remarks come about two weeks after Cook stated that Apple recorded record revenues in several countries, including India.
